How Varicose Veins Damages Self Esteem

Beauty and image has always been a concern for most people, especially when it comes to the skin. As any beauty expert would say, it is better to have an imperfect nose than an imperfect skin. In women, varicose veins in the legs have been admitted and reported to create an inferiority complex. Varicose vein is a health condition that affects not only the physical appearance of the patient, but as well as the blood circulation. For some people varicose veins can be very painful and it can also be a sign of a more serious vein condition such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). For most people, varicose veins may just be physical; however, for many individuals, physical appearance is very important, especially if such vein conditions will cause their legs to look imperfect.

Removal of varicose veins can be quite expensive, especially if the case is severe. People are always trying to find the most cost effective ways to remove or prevent varicose veins. People who are serious about preventing or treating the condition should do a little research. It is best to first understand the reality of the condition before foregoing treatment. If the varicose veins are caused by a systemic cardiovascular disease, then it is best to treat this condition first before treating the vein condition; treatment of the root problem should be done first.

Varicose veins are developed due to weak veins and valves. Veins function to bring back deoxygenated blood to the heart. Veins in the legs have valves to keep the blood flow back to the heart. When veins become weak and distended, its elasticity is decreased eventually making the valves useless. This is how varicose veins start to form. Blood pools will lead to bulging of weak or dysfunctional veins.

In order to prevent varicose veins from developing, it is advised by vein specialists to keep a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a complete diet. Heavy weight, extended long hours of standing or sitting may encourage varicose veins to develop. For people with work activities that require prolonged standing or sitting, compression stockings may help keep the veins in the legs tightened. Elevation of the legs just above the level of the heart when resting will help maintain the blood flow. Losing weight can also help in preventing varicose veins from developing.

Varicose veins have been reported to affect a patient’s self esteem. In order to avoid such emotional turmoil from happening, it is best to stay healthy. People with varicose veins may seek help from vein specialists in hospitals. Vein removal procedures are often done in an office setting and most of them will allow patients to drive back home right after a procedure.
