How does vnus closure work? My friend had this procedure for her varicose veins and she recommended it to me. How does the procedure actually work?

VNUS "Closure" closes the saphenous vein below the surface without surgically removing it. A small intravenous catheter is inserted into the vein, passed for its length, and slowly withdrawn to the point of entry (after local anesthesia) while heat is delivered to "cauterize" and cause the vein to shrink. It is an excellent procedure similar to laser ablation which has essentially replaced vein stripping for most patients.

The vnus closure works by using heat close the saphenous vein, which is the vein that used to be removed in "Vein Stripping". This procedure was approved for use by the FDA in 1999. The procedure involved using ultrasound guidance to place a radio frequency catheter in the saphenous vein, injecting local anesthesia along the length of the vein to be treated, turning on the device and withdrawing it to seal the vein. The initial device was cumbersome and the results were inferior to lasers which could be used to close the vein with better results, lower complications, and more cost effectively. The device has been improved on and after some initial disastrous complication, it now approaches the efficacy of laser. The cost of the procedures have now become more comparable due to bogus patent infringement lawsuits filed against the laser manufacturers in an effort to make the cost of doing the procedure comparable, thus driving up health care costs. Although I have both laser and VNUS closure device, I prefer Laser for the previously stated reasons.

Radiofrequency uses electrical energy to generate "resistive heating" on the thermonuclear located at the end of the RF catheter. This catheter is inserted into the vein in the mid calf area and floated up to the groin, ?which is then positioned and secured in place ?via ultrasound imaging . This catheter is then connected to a computerized generator via a cable. The space around the vein, is then?infiltrated with local anesthesia fluid, ?so that the patient does not feel the heat. The generator is then turned on, ?and?the ?heat, contracts the connective tissue in the vein, and congeals the blood in the vein being treated, similarly to boiling an egg. The overall effect results in shortening the length, and reducing the diameter of the vein being treated. This takes approximately 5-7 min. The success rate is 97-100% effective. Over the course of several months, the vein is reabsorbed by the body. Improvement in leg symptoms are immediate.
