How effective are herbal remedies with ruscogenins for alleviating varicose vein symptoms?

I have heard that herbal remedies that contain ruscogenins can help alleviate some varicose vein symptoms. How do these remedies work and how effective are they?

Ruscogenins have been used to help with the symptoms of hemorrhoids, but are really not useful for varicose veins of the legs. Treatment for leg veins are now done as office procedures with no changes in normal activities so I would suggest an evaluation at a vein clinic to discuss your varicose veins and medical treatment options.

These are Chinese herbal products which actually have an anti-inflammatory effect which may alleviate some symptoms of varicose veins. However varicose veins are usually a pressure relief valve for underlying saphenous incompetence. This is usually an inherited condition. If symptoms are present the underlying cause should be treated and this is a minimally invasive procedure done under local anesthesia by a board certified vascular surgeon. The preliminary evaluation should include a thorough ultrasound examination.

The value of herbal benefits for varicose veins is unproven.

Ruscus root is used to extract ruscogenins, which has anti-inflammatory properties. It is used in a number of skin care products. It does not hurt to try if you are not sensitive to its properties.
