Adverse effects of sclerotherapy are usually temporary and include mild stinging, brown pigmentation, and the appearance of new veins. More serious reactions include allergic reactions, migraine headaches, visual disturbance, trouble breathing with chest discomfort, and stroke. The vast majority of patients experience no such reactions when treated by experts. By comparison, surgery has a longer list of potential problems, and surface laser doesn't work very well at all.
