Video Overview

What procedures are used to diagnose spider veins? While the temptation is to judge a book by its cover, in this case, to assume that a group of surface veins without any obvious bulging or dilation are just spider veins is the most common mistake that people make. Experiences taught me that all patients should have a thorough history and physical examination. The examination must include a duplex ultrasound of the patient in a standing position. If no abnormal flow is detected in the vein, then it is safe, effective and appropriate to treat the surface veins and no additional diagnostic testing is necessary.
