Video Overview

Why are varicose veins painful? Varicose veins are painful for the same reasons that they provide all their symptoms. Symptoms such as swelling, aching, itching, and pain are all caused by venous pooling. Symptoms typically are best in the morning when the veins are at their smallest but as the day progresses and we're up on our feet, the veins get bigger. You get increased venous pooling which stretches the veins and causes increased symptoms.
